SECRET SQUIRREL BUSINESS
Having wowed the fashion industry since her label’s inception in 2007, we were super excited to go behind the seams with Bri Cheeseman - one half of the fashionable duo behind our new fave label Secret Squirrel (with Andrew Prince). With a range that is effortless and timeless, yet appeals to a modern audience, we couldn’t wait to find out who Secret Squirrel are, what makes the label tick and why weekend markets are a fashionista’s secret style weapon!
Q. Where does your passion for fashion come from?
Probably from the many years playing dress ups as a little girl with my sister and friends, although some of the outfits where outrageous, I also believe that you are what you wear, where you can express who you are as an individual and can really change your mind-set or reflect the mood you’re in.
Q: How did you conceive of the brand?
The labels conception was a really organic thing- we started out at the markets and just went from there, refining what we wanted Squirrel to be as we went along. We’ve been really lucky to have support from loyal fans from the very beginning and with help from amazing people along the way (and a lot of hard work) we are where we are today.
Q. What is the philosophy behind the brand? Where do you get your inspiration?
Secret Squirrel is all about beautiful, wearable clothing that is of great quality and stands the test of time. Music is probably the biggest ongoing source of inspiration for us- we are forever finding new music and listening to old favourites like The Rolling Stones, music plays a big part in the design process for us.
Q: Your label started out in Sydney’s weekend markets. Do you still love to trawl through markets? Do you think they are an important part of the Australian fashion landscape?
We adore the markets and love to search for hidden treasures or sourcing pieces for our home.
Markets definitely have their place in the Australian fashion landscape- like us, they are where many young designers start out and it’s exciting to see people doing their own thing and the excitement and energy they have about what they are making and selling.
As a stallholder markets are also a great place to find out what people want to buy and what they don’t!
Q. What fashion trends are on your radar for Spring Summer 2010/11?
We’re loving all the neutrals that are around for summer, and also anything with a back detail- our Nomad top with woven silk straps over a cutaway back is a favourite.
Q: What is your no. 1 fashion philosophy?
Less is more.
Q: What beauty products do you never leave the house without?
Black eyeliner, mascara and plenty of sunscreen! I have fair skin.
